Data backup
A backup is a retained copy used to restore data or a system after loss or corruption.
How it works
Frequency, retention and isolation follow recovery objectives. A successful backup report is not a substitute for a restoration test with integrity checks.
Hypothetical small business example
A business can restore a test copy of its application in an isolated environment to verify the necessary files and dependencies.
Benefits and limitations
Limit data loss and prepare an organized recovery.
A synchronized copy may reproduce a deletion. Backups may contain sensitive information and need protection.
Common question
How do we know a backup works?
Regularly restore a representative sample, measure the time required and check that expected data and functions are recoverable.
